Man surprised to find an entire family of lynx playing on his porch

This incident where a family of lynx appeared on a man’s porch captured the attention of millions.

The lynx is a solitary cat that dwells in the remote northern forests of North America, Europe, and Asia.  They are long-legged and their bodies are covered with thick fur that protects them from the harsh winter cold. Their large paws make for great natural snowshoes, as they are also furry and hit the ground with a spreading toe motion.

Rarely seen, these cats are highly elusive – they hunt at night and avoid humans. So when a photographer in Alaska chanced upon a family of lynx on his porch, he just couldn’t believe it!

Born and living in Alaska, Tim Newton has had the chance to photograph incredibly rare animals and the beautiful landscapes of his country. In honor of its rich land and its wilderness, Tim created the website Rugged Alaska, where he shares his astonishing snapshots of Alaska’s raw grandeur.

On September 19, 2017, Tim experienced the highlight of his photography career.

It was near dawn when he was awakened by a strange noise outside his home.

“Coming out of my slumber, I thought, ‘What the heck is that?’ So I put on my bathrobe and slowly eased back the curtain. And right there, 2 feet away, was a lynx kitten. He was sitting there watching his siblings race by,” he told The Dodo.

He was shocked to see three lynx kittens playing on his porch! He immediately grabbed his camera and started taking pictures of them from behind his window.

“They were running back and forth, pouncing on each other,” Tim said. “I started snapping away. I thought, ‘Wow! What incredible luck. This just beats all. This is just wonderful!’”

Lynx are rarely seen by humans, and Tim himself has only spotted them a few times in the wild. So to get the opportunity to take pictures of them in the comfort of his own home was a truly thrilling experience!

Tim was able to take a few snapshots before they scampered off. By then, he thought that was the end of it.

But he was wrong, for a better surprise was in store for him.

He gently opened the inside of the screen door and he heard a mewing sound. It was then that he saw the mother lynx calling to her kittens from the grass. Then, one by one, all seven of her offspring lined up on his deck.

“SEVEN KITTENS! My camera started to click from behind the door screen, and they all looked up to see what that strange noise was! Soon, they proceeded to play and frolic on the deck, and then in the yard, for the better part of an hour,” Tim wrote.

That is definitely one beautiful family photo right there!

Observing just how rowdy the kittens were, Tim admired how well their mother handled all of them.

“She has her hands full,” he said. “I’ve concluded that lynx must spend 1 percent of their waking lives chasing rabbits, and 99 percent chasing their kids. What a handful!”

Well, it seems like the experience of motherhood is the same for all species!

It looks the lynx found that Tim’s backyard was the perfect spot to play in and then decide to hang out on his porch. They came back for playtime a few more times after that: once in November, once in December, and once in January 2018.

Tim always made sure to take photos and videos when this happens. You may check them at Rugged Alaska or at his official Facebook page.
